About Coastguard Hawke's Bay
Coastguard Hawke's Bay was established to look out for the safety of every person in the Hawke's Bay region. No one sets out for the day, expecting to call on us. Every year though, many are glad we were there when needed.
To provide this service, our current resources include:
- A 11.5 metre AMF rigid hull inflatable with twin Cummins 480 horsepower driving two Hamilton Jet units, which can push the vessel and crew of 6 along in reasonable conditions at 35 knots (from the breakwater to Cape Kidnappers in about 25 minutes)
- 6 Certified Rescue Vessel skippers
- 25 Rescue vessel crew members including trainees
- 4 Base crew members
- An incident mangement team
- A radio watch service with 17 trained radio operators
- We have a management committee of 15 people providing governance and management to the organisation
How does it all work when it goes wrong out at sea…
Last year Coastguard Hawke's Bay attended:
- 17 Police 111 emergency call outs
- Included 0 fatalities and 10 rescued from the sea
- 24 callouts to help vessels which had broken down or needed assistance
- 12 community activity patrols eg powerboat races
- 2 oil spill exercises and 50 crew training exercises
- Our radio crew logged over 4,000 trip reports
You may be very surprised to learn that Coastguard is not Government funded. We are a member organisation totally dependent upon community support to fund our operations. This revenue comes from membership subscriptions, donations, grants, sponsorships and other fund-raising activities.
